A fast-growing digital design company led by a group of Plymouth University graduates is expanding rapidly with the help of business mentoring support.
Mutant Labs, based on Royal William Yard in Plymouth, was established in 2009 by joint founders Alex Ryley, Andrew Sargeant, Ben Reynhart, Chris Mayoh and Richard Searle who started the business after meeting on the Digital Art and Technology course at the University of Plymouth.
The business specialises in the design and development of innovative mobile apps and games as well as websites, motion graphics and animation. Since its inception, Mutant Labs has worked for clients including MindCandy, Absolute Radio and North One Television and also represented the South West at last year’s Lloyds TSB Enterprise Awards.

In order to help the business develop further, the founders joined the Business Mentors South West (BMSW) mentoring programme where they were partnered with Duncan Webster, a mentor with BMSW and part of the Lloyds Bank mentor team in the SW who are seconded to BMSW in a voluntary capacity to help smaller companies. Duncan has provided the team with valuable and impartial guidance on how they can grow their business further and take advantage of new opportunities.
Alex Ryley, co-founder of Mutant Labs, said: “Since we launched, Mutant Labs has continuously moved from strength to strength and we can’t believe how quickly our reputation has grown, not just in the South West but across the whole country.

BMSW exceeded all of our expectations by helping us develop a long-term strategy for growth as we now have a clear idea of where we want to take our business and some of the steps we can take to ensure we reach our goals.
“As a digital design company, it is crucial we remain at the forefront of innovation and continually develop our products to ensure we are one step ahead of our competitors. We decided that a business mentor would be able to help us with that as they can look at our business objectively as well as pass on their own skills and expertise.
“Duncan has exceeded all of our expectations and has supported us in ways we never anticipated. The most valuable aspect he has helped us with is developing a long-term strategy for growth as we now have a clear idea of where we want to take our business and some of the steps we can take to ensure we reach our goals.”
Duncan Webster said: “The Mutant Labs team is a brilliant group of ambitious graduates who have a great balance of creativity and real business acumen. It is a pleasure to work with them and offer my support wherever I can.
“My day job requires me to develop a deep understanding of businesses and I frequently deliver professional reviews and advise on business risk and controls so mentoring Mutant Labs gave me the perfect opportunity to transfer these skills into a commercial environment. I am also part of the IT specialist team within the audit department, so my IT knowledge and experience meant I was well suited to work with the business.
